The most important thing to adding fractions is getting common denominators .
Examples :
If I have the problem 1/5+2/5 first I have to see if there are common denominators if it does i can add the numerators together and I get 3/ after you add the numerator stays the same so the anwser is 3/5 .
a fraction is made up of a numerator and a denominator . The top number is the numerator and the bottom part of the fraction is the denominator
1/3 +2/4 i can't add these two fractions together because they do NOT have the same denominators . I MUST get common denominators !! To get common denominators I will multiply the fraction 1/3 by the other fractions denominator (4) . I will then multiply the fraction 2/4 by the other denominator (3). What ever I multiply the denominator I must multiply the numerator by.
So......my new fractions become 4/12 +6/12 =10/12 I ask myself " but wait...... Is there more?? Yes!! I can simplify ! This fraction can be divide by 2 . My final fraction is 5/6.
